It’s BACON Time

So as of tomorrow we will have one less pig.  We started out with 4 pigs and here is our story:

A couple of years ago I agreed to go out on a date with a guy, who happened to turn into my husband.   On this date we rode ATVs around his hunting property and he took me to see some baby pigs at a farm nearby.  As we were sitting there watching the pigs he kissed me for the first time and told me that one day he would have me a little pen with some pigs in it.

So fast-forward to the Spring of 2016 we finally got the pen built and got 4 baby pigs.

From the left you have Valerie, Hogly Parton, Wilburt, and Puddin.

We have really come to enjoy watching them and feeding them.  My daughter loves to get in the pen and run around and feed them.

Now that they are bigger and can knock her off her feet she doesn’t get in there as often.  We have learned a lot and absolutely will continue raising pigs for as long as we have the ability.  There is just something about knowing exactly where your meat came from and the work that was put into it that makes it taste so much better.

In August we had a big pig roast with friends and family and ate Hogly Parton (we still have some of her in the freezer).  It was an evening of food, laughter, and a pretty intense game of kickball, and our little Hogly Parton brought us all together for it.  Then Valerie had a bad reaction to some beans and we lost her unfortunately (she was my favorite).  And that brings us to where we are today.  We have Puddin and Wilburt currently and Puddin will be leaving us tomorrow for a short time till she is back in our freezer.  They have grown so big and have really grown some interesting personalities.  Puddin is now about 425 lbs and is a big bully to Wilburt who is a little smaller then her.

We will give Wilburt a few weeks to gain some extra weight and he will follow Puddin to the frezzer.  Then we will start all over with 5 baby pigs and I am so excited to have little ones again!
